Grim start to new year as 10 people die and revellers cause mayhem on the streets

Ten people were killed as Britain’s new year got off to a grim start.
Three died on rail tracks, there were three suspected murders, a man was swept out to sea and road accidents claimed three more lives.
The deaths came as revellers poured on to the streets for the biggest party of the year which stretched emergency services to breaking point.
In London alone, 48 people were held for offences including carrying weapons, assault, sexual assault,
drug possession and assaulting police.
The three rail deaths all came in the first nine hours of the new year.
At Clapham North Station, South London, a woman in her 20s was hit and killed by an Underground train at around 3am.
