The driver and another person in the car were injured in the incident, which took place in the town of Valence, in Drome, southeastern France.
According to ledauphine.com, the motorist was hit in the arm and the leg, suffering serious injuries.
He was subsequently detained by police.
The website reports that three soldiers and a passer-by were also lightly wounded.
