Chelsea returned to the top of the Premier League table as Diego Costa’s superb goal gave them a 1-0 win in a tough encounter with West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea returned to the top of the Premier League and restored a three point advantage over nearest rivals Arsenal thanks to a 1-0 win against West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge.
Diego Costa outmuscled Gareth McAuley to score from a tight angle in the 76th minute and extend the Blues' winning run to nine league games after they had endured a frustrating afternoon against an organised Baggies side.
Antonio Conte made one change to the team that beat Manchester City 3-1 last weekend, Nemanja Matic returning to midfield in place of Cesc Fabregas, while West Brom boss Tony Pulis named the same XI for a fifth successive game.
And the Baggies made a livelier start to the game than their hosts, creating the first real opportunity in the 25th minute when Salomon Rondon used his strength to good effect to get past David Luiz and shoot across the face of goal.
Two minutes later a speculative N'Golo Kante effort from outside the penalty area was almost deflected beyond Ben Foster by Pedro but large parts of the game were notable for West Brom's ability to stifle Chelsea creatively and restrict them to few dangerous chances.
Conte switched to a back four in the second half and introduced Willian and Fabregas in an effort to break down West Brom's deep defensive ranks and was rewarded with Costa's strike.
McAuley misjudged Fabregas' ball down the right wing, allowing Costa, who had previously been starved of chances, to gain possession and fire into the roof of the net.
